Annual Sand Dunes National Park Family Campout, May 2006

Two night family campout at the Sand Dunes National Park, Alamosa, Colorado.  Arrived Friday night, set up camp then the Troop climbed the sand dunes in the dark with only flashlights and glow sticks.  Saturday we continued back to the Dunes to hike to the top of the highest dune.  Some collected "Magnetite" using magnets and some found the small water stream and played in the cool water.  Afternoon we had a hike into the Zapata Falls and saw the contrast of ice still in the canyon at the waterfall.  Saturday night lots of great reciepes were cooked and several dutch oven recipies were fantastic.  The Scouts played their usual capture the flag game.  We had our traditional wood burning campfire and we sang songs as well as dutch oven desserts.  Our SPL Tim Hartbarger conducted a wonderful flag retirement using one of two very special American Flags given to him by his grandfather who served in the Navy in the 1940's and flew that flag on his ship.  Thanks Tim for sharing this special flag for our ceremony.
